Dear colleagues,

We would like to inform you that the “International PhD School on Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs)” (IPS-AOP) organizes the 3rd European Summer School on “Environmental Applications of  AOPs” which will be held in Alcoy (Spain) from 3rd to 7th June 2019.

The Summer School is among the initiatives organized for IPS-AOP affiliated PhD students, but other PhD students, MSc students, post-doctoral researchers and professionals are also welcome. The lectures will be delivered by internationally recognized experts on AOPs and complementary topics.  

In the “first flyer” document you will find all the relevant information on the Summer School, including a detailed program. You also find attached the registration form in word format as well as the information on accommodation and venue.

Best AOPs PhD thesis 2017
We are happy to announce that the prize for the best PhD thesis of 2017 has been awarded to Dr. Giuseppina (Giusy) Iervolino (average IF as high as 6.709) with a thesis entitled “Advanced oxidation processes for food industry wastewater valorization and treatment” and supervised by Prof. Diana Sannino and co-supervised by Prof. Vincenzo Vaiano, Luigi Rizzo, Paolo Ciambelli (University of Salerno) and Panagiotis Lianos (University of Patras).

Summer School in photochemistry and depollution
The “Summer School in photochemistry and depollution” is organized at Clermont-Ferrand (France) (25-27 April) in the context of the EU Marie Curie ITN project Aquality. Thanks to Prof. Paola Calza, the PhD students affiliated with “EU PhD School on AOPs” are entitled of a reduced fee (100 euro instead of 200 euro).

SPEA10 Conference: reduced fee for AOPs School affiliated PhD students

The 10th European Meeting on Solar Chemistry and Photocatalysis: Environmental Applications (SPEA10, 2018) will be held in Almería (Spain) from the 4th to 8th of June, 2018.

The School congratulates Bianca Miguel de Souza, from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), that has been awarded the “European PhD on Advanced Oxidation Processes” label for her PhD thesis entitled “Degradation of diclofenac and 3-amine-5-methylisoxazole by a homogeneous solar photo-Fenton process mediated by ferrioxalate complexes ” (supervisors: Márcia Walquíria de Carvalho Dezotti , Vitor Vilar). Dr. de Souza is the first no-EU candidate to receive the label after the Management Committee revised the requirements to join the School and get the label (please see December 8, 2016 update in Researchgate: https://www.researchgate.net/project/European-PhD-School-on-Advanced-Oxidation-Processes).

2nd Summer School on Environmental applications of AOPs, Porto July 10-14, 2017: 1st announcement

After the 1st successful Summer School held in Salerno (Italy) in 2015 (please visit this web page for information: http://www.aops-school.com/summer-school/), we are happy to announce that the 2nd Summer School on Environmental applications of AOPs will be held in Porto on July 10-14, 2017.

The Summer School is among the initiatives organized by “EU PhD School on AOPs” for School PhD candidates (free of charge), but other PhD students, MSc students, post-doc and professionals are also welcome (details about the fee and deadlines are given in the attached “registration form”).

Research presented in the Summer School will be considered for possible publication in a special issue of “Environmental Science and Pollution Research” journal (Springer, Impact Factor: 2.760).

EAAOP 5 conference 25-29 June 2017: special fee for the members of “EU PhD School on AOPs” 

The 5th European Conference on Environmental Applications of Advanced Oxidation Processes – EAAOP5 – will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from Sunday 25th June to Thursday 29th June 2017. The deadline for abstract submission is 31st January 2017, the on-line registration will be open on 20th March and the on-line Abstract submission already started (the abstract template is available on: http://www.eaaop5.com/abstracts).

News for no-EU countries PhD candidates

To address the increasing number of requests from no-EU countries PhD candidates to join our School, the Management Committee (MC) made the decision to allow no-EU Countries PhD candidates to apply to the School if they fulfill the following requirements:

  1. the PhD thesis deals with environmental applications of AOPs;
  2. the PhD candidate come from a Country included in this map (all countries marked in dark green, light green, blue and red in the map are aligible);
  3. the PhD candidate is aware that she/he is expected to be co-supervised by a member of the Scientific Committe (SC) of the School.

Moreover, the PhD candidate should be aware that to be awarded the “EU PhD on AOPs” label:

  1. she/he is expected to spent at least 3 months in the co-supervisor’s lab;
  2. her/his PhD thesis (or at least an extended summary) should be written in English;
  3. as she/he is awarded the PhD degree at her/his University, she/he can send the Scool Coordinator (prof. Luigi Rizzo, l.rizzo@unisa.it) the thesis to be evaluated and eventually awarded with “EU PhD on AOPs” label; differently, the label will be automatically awarded in the case that she/he meets all previous requirements and at least one member of the evaluation committee is also a member of the School SC.

Research Officer position in non-thermal plasma for water treatment at College of Engineering, Swansea University

The College of Engineering at Swansea University is looking to appoint a highly motivated Research Officer to develop non-thermal plasma reactors for water treatment.  The Research Officer position is available for an EPSRC funded period and will join a productive research group within the College at Swansea University.

Best poster at Leading Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technology 2016

The poster entitled “Photocatalytic Disinfection of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria and Resulting Antibiotic Resistance Gene Transfer in Urban Wastewater”, by Patrick SM Dunlop, M Ciavola, L Rizzo, DA McDowell, JA Byrne was awarded the best poster prize at 13th IWA Leading Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technology (LET), held on 13-16 June, 2016 in Jerez de la Frontera (Spain). The successful candidate will be committed to carry out research activities at University of Salerno (Italy), within the specific project ESR12 concerning the “Development of a new photocatalytic reactor for wastewater disinfection and subsequent application in crops irrigation: effect on antibiotic resistance transfer and ARB&ARG accumulation in crops.”

Best AOPs PhD thesis prize and 2015 winner

The Management Committee of the School made the decision to establish a prize for the best PhD thesis. The prize will be awarded to the candidate with the higher average value of the Impact Factor calculated as the average value of the 3 publications with the higher impact factor.

Accordingly, the winner for 2015 is Dr. Elisabet Ortega Gòmez (average IF as high as 7.43) with a thesis entitled “Microorganisms inactivation in wastewater by solar photo-Fenton at neutral pH” and co-supervised by prof. José Antonio Sanchez Perez (Universidad de Almeria) and dr. Pilar Fernandez Ibanez (Plataforma Solar de Almeria).

The prize, offered by prof. Huseyin Selcuk and prof. Sureyya Meric, is a free registration to RR2016 conference will be held in Istanbul next 28-30 September 2016.

The School congratulates Elisabet and her co-supervisors José Antonio and Pilar for the prize.

Best AOPs PhD thesis prize and 2014 winner

The Management Committee of the School made the decision to establish a prize for the best PhD thesis. The prize will be awarded to the candidate with the higher average value of the Impact Factor calculated as the average value of the 3 publications with the higher impact factor.

Accordingly, the winner for 2014 is Dr. Ricardo André Ribeiro Monteiro (average IF as high as 4.93) with the PhD thesis entitled: “Solar Photocatalysis for Gas-Phase Air Cleaning: from lab to pilot plant studies” and supervised by Vitor Jorge Pais Vilar (Universidade do Porto).”

The prize, offered by Prof. Mantzavinos and organizing conference committee, is a free registration to EAAOP4 conference will be held in Athens next 21-24 October 2015.

The School congratulates Ricardo and his supervisor Vitor for the prize.
